What Went Wrong is the sixth episode of the eighth season and the 165th overall episode of Chicago Fire.

Summary[]

Cruz and Severide suspect foul play when a fire started by an elderly woman turns deadly. Kidd, Foster and Brett create a women’s-only lounge. Firehouse 51 celebrates some good news.

Plot[]

With Officer Ruzek, they confront Jim and Kristen over the fire. They voice their suspicion that Jim did it to take the money of his mother-in-law, despite his pleas of innocence. Hearing that their son will be put in the system, Kristen speaks up and announces that she was the one that did it and goes into detail of how she looked into similar fires in which the victims never woke up. She then pleads for them not to take Trevor away from Jim because of what she did. The firefighters and Ruzek watch as the horrified Jim asks his wife how she could kill her own mother and she stated with the money, their lives would have been better, especially for their son. Kristen apologizes to Jim, who can only react in shock at her actions. Ruzek takes her away for questioning, as she continues to apologize to her now-devastated husband.
