Two Families is the seventh episode of the first season and the 7th overall episode of Chicago Fire.

Summary[]

Everyone in the firehouse is ordered to take a drug test after a call to a daycare center exposes them to a makeshift meth lab, and Severide stalls, not wanting his injury, or the painkillers he takes, to be discovered. Meanwhile, Truck and Squad find themselves pinned down by gunfire while trying to help the victim of a gang shooting, and a deep-fried turkey fire grows from small to explosive when a garage catches fire. Elsewhere, Dawson saves a bleeding man and Casey delivers a baby on the scene of a massive car pileup on the freeway.

Plot[]

The team gets called to the site of a gas leak at a day-care and discovers a hidden meth lab. Boden calls for a mandatory baseline drug test for the entire firehouse to make sure everyone’s in the clear. Severide, knowing he's been using painkillers without a prescription, asks Shay if the narcotics will show up on a drug test. She confirms that he has a reason to be worried. Boden notices a young boy hanging around who has been at a few past fire calls. The boy says his name is Ernie and he lives nearby. He tells Boden he likes to watch. Boden invites him to the firehouse, hoping to get a feel for the boy and his situation.

Later, the team gets called to the site of a gang shooting. When they try to reach the victim they discover they are in the middle of a turf war and the shooting is still going on. Using their truck and the ambo as shields, they are able to reach the victim who tells them there is a second victim around the corner. This person turns out to be Leon, Cruz's brother. When Cruz goes to pick him up at the hospital the next day, Leon has already checked out.

Ernie shows up at the firehouse and Boden asks Herrmann to talk to him to get a read on him. He shares his suspicion that Ernie may be an arsonist. After spending some time with him, Herrmann agrees that the boy could be a fire-bug. Ernie's dad is in prison, his mom is nowhere to be found, and he's being raised by his grandmother. Herrmann tells Boden the kid's story fits but, there's no way to be sure. When Boden asks to see the contents of the boy’s backpack, the boy gets spooked and takes off.

A representative from the company doing the drug test comes to the firehouse to collect the urine samples. Everyone has turned in their sample leaving Severide as the last one. When his name is called he gets saved by a call to the site of a residential fire. It turns out to be a turkey fire, just as Herrmann predicted. Once back at the station, Severide has run out of excuses. He reluctantly goes into the restroom, but Shay walks in and hands him a clean urine sample while giving him a death stare to make sure he knows she doesn’t approve of his behavior.

The fourth and final call of the day is a multi-car pile up. While Dawson and Shay tend to a victim with an arterial neck wound, Casey frees a car with a young couple stuck inside. Turns out the woman is pregnant and going into labor. He calls to the paramedics for help but they have their hands full, they talk him through delivering the baby over the radio. The baby arrives with an obstructed airway, Casey performs mouth-to-mouth and we hear a cry over the radio. The baby is fine and healthy.

Back at the firehouse, the team finally gets to sit down to dinner. Boden toasts the entire team, telling them all the drug tests came back clean. Dawson congratulates Casey on delivering the baby, telling him since it's his first delivery, everyone has to buy him a round. Everyone toasts and cheers as they get down to eating.

Later at home, Casey excitedly tells Hallie about how he delivered and revived a baby. He grabs Hallie telling her that he wants to have a baby, soon. Hallie tells Casey that she doesn’t know if she’ll ever want kids.

The episode ends with a split scene of Otis telling his podcast listeners he is grateful for his "two families" and Dawson buying Casey a drink to celebrate his first delivery.
