Knowing she was adopted, she was never curious to know who her birth parents were.

First shown as a naive person because she's from a small town and who believes in what people tell her, she is advised not to trust in everyone specially after being robbed.

Years after living in Chicago she briefly moves to her hometown with her fiancé Kyle and when she bumps into her former friend Hope who says that Sylvie doesn't fit in a big city like Chicago and that people were hoping for her return, Brett talks with Kyle, saying that she misses her job and her friends they end their relationship mutually because he doesn't want Sylvie to be unhappy. As she was leaving to Chicago, her friends Emily Foster and Stella Kidd got to her door to convince Brett to get back and get happy when they see her already with a suit case.

Season 3

Sylvie joins the firehouse as a replacement for the deceased Shay. Initially, Dawson was cautious when working with her, but they quickly became best friends. However, when the house gets toned out for a call and Severide first sees her after returning from over a month-long break, he does a double-take while she's walking away from him, noticing the resemblance between her and Shay. This then escalates to the point where he tries to hang out with her, using her to get past Shay since they look alike. It takes him a long time to get past this until he gets married to Brittany.

Sylvie tells the house that she ran away after getting cold feet before her marriage. However, her husband to-be finds her working at 51 and comes to visit her. He apologizes in front of everyone for leaving her before their marriage, revealing that he's the one who had cold feet. Nonetheless, she gets back together with him briefly until she realizes he has a very overbearing nature. He psychologically tries to dominate her by telling her how she should feel and where she should work, as well as assuming that she was going to move in with him after getting robbed. She tells him she's happy in Chicago, but he tells her she isn't. She breaks up with him again after shaming him for his control issues and he leaves.

Sylvie joins the best rated Zumba club she found on Yelp and finds that the instructor is none other than Cruz. They agree to keep it a secret as long as she can teach him how to cook since he's opening Molly's 2, but she ends up telling Casey, due to his misunderstanding of the relationship of the two. She asks if he keep can it a secret, but he ends up telling it to Dawson, then Herrmann, then Mouch, then everyone else. (Chopper)

Cruz then asks her out and she rejects him. However, she accepts sometime later, and they start dating.

She's partnered with Peter Mills, who replaced Dawson as Paramedic in Charge, on Ambulance 61. They go on a call to help a teenage boy who was drowning and appeared to be stable when placed in the ambulance. However, on the ride to the hospital, he suffers from a pulmonary edema because of secondary drowning. He's pronounced dead not long after he arrives at the hospital. The boy's father is Papa Lullo, a senior mafia member. He turns up at the firehouse blaming Mills for his son's death. (Arrest in Transit)

Soon after this, Mills and Brett are called to help a man injured by a fall down a back ally. However, things seem suspicious when they get there as he wasn't injured by a fall, but run over and there's a vehicle blocking one of the ally's exits. Before they can load him into the ambulance, some of Lullo's men show up and kidnap them. It's hours before the station notices. (Santa Bites)

In the car, Brett and Mills both fight their kidnappers, causing the car to crash. Everyone survives the crash, but one of the kidnappers is severely injured and in need of medical attention. They're forced at gunpoint to try and save him without going to the hospital. Brett tells Mills to clamp where he shouldn't to let one of the captors die, but neither can go through with it. They manage to escape from their captors, but get themselves trapped. They're eventually rescued by Firehouse 51 and Jay Halstead. (Let Him Die)

She is upset that Mills has chosen to go to North Carolina near the end of Season 3 and during his goodbye party, she breaks down in tears and hugs him goodbye.

Season 4

During a call, Sylvie gets attached to a baby she delivered to a gunshot victim mother who died in the ambulance. She visits the baby in the hospital several times until Chief Boden finds out and tells her to let it go, as does Chili. However, she still goes back, where she meets Daniel Charles (Chicago Med). He tells her secretly to check the father's details while the receptionist is out. She goes to see him and tells him about his son, but he ignores her. However, when she comes back to see the baby yet again, the father is there and he thanks her.

She and Chili also help host a wedding, where she sings.

When Chili leaves for rehab, Brett is made Paramedic in Charge.

When she finds out that Jimmy is leaving, she confesses her feelings for him, which she later tries to cover up when she finds out he is staying in the CFD and working alongside her as her new partner. (Bad For the Soul)

Season 5

To help the young man, Brett goes as his date to the dance and his peers all look at him in amazement for this. His crush even finds it hard to believe that he got a beautiful date while he basks in this attention. (I Held Her Hand)

Both Chilli and Jimmy leave as paramedics, leaving Dawson to return to her old spot and work alongside Brett. However, Brett is in charge this time around, which is a difference Dawson doesn't seem to acknowledge sometimes. During one of the cases, Dawson's brother Antonio Dawson shows up and she instantly develops a liking towards him. After some consideration, she asks him out, but he refuses, saying that his breakup with his ex-wife is still on his mind and he doesn't want her mixed up in it. She responds by saying that she doesn't mind and as a result, they start going out.

She tries harder to impress Antonio's son Diego, who likes to play chess and whom she doesn't connect with. Otis teaches her how to play and Antonio later asks her to take care of Diego when he's suddenly called to work. She agrees and she and Diego are at the firehouse when Antonio's ex-wife, Laura, shows up abruptly and asks Diego to wait for her while she harshly tells Brett that she doesn't trust her and doesn't want a girl like her around her son. This upsets her and when Antonio shows up, she tells him what happened and he apologizes. She adds that she doesn't want to be in the middle of his fight with him and his ex-wife and he tells her that he warned her before this, but she replies that she didn't expect to be directly confronted by Laura. He lashes out and she breaks up with him.

Antonio later shows up at her door and apologizes, but she is still angry. She later tries to get her mind off Antonio by doing extra exercise at the firehouse, trying to find online makeup classes, changing her look and even learning German. Dawson feels bad and tries setting her up with people Casey knows, but Casey doesn't want to get involved in her love life.

Season 6

Connie gets a call from Hope's previous place of employment stating that Hope was accused of stealing $10,000. (An Even Bigger Surprise)

Hope tells Sylvie that she didn't steal anything, but that she had an affair with her boss which went sideways and led to her being accused of stealing which is why there weren't any charges made against her. Sylvie trusts her, though Kidd is still skeptical of her. (A Breaking Point)

Hope hands everyone their paycheck aside from Kidd's which she says is missing. Kidd thinks that Hope is messing with her or possibly stealing, especially given the rumors. Hope works hard to fix the issue and gets a new check for Kidd, which Kidd is impressed by. Sylvie, however, is more skeptical and questions her about making sure she's not trying to make herself look like a hero which she says she isn't. (Devil's Bargain)

Matthew Casey was concerned about how Stella Kidd had randomly been transferred to the PR unit and so looks into her transfer. It was signed by Chief Mullins and so Casey goes to ask him about it only to find that Mullins never signed the order. The order was forged by Hope as similarities could be seen between her handwriting and the signature given. She tried to explain her, but just ended up getting tongue tied and so Boden asked her to to pack up her desk and leave immediately.

She tries to explain herself to Sylvie by saying that she believed she was doing the right thing for women but that her actions were twisted, but Sylvie just shouts at her and walks away. Sylvie cut off ties with Hope and later calling Hope her 'former friend' and ignoring the messages Hope continues to send. (Down is Better)

She helps Cruz develop his Slamigan tool by making prototypes using her welding skills to weld the halligan and sledgehammer together. (Slamigan)

Cruz freaks out over her safety after she and Dawson agree to help Antonio and Voight. They distract a patient whose house they have been called to three times prior under the pretence of doing a wellness check while a cop sneaks in the back door to clone the man's laptop. When there is a knock on the door, Brett hides a scalpel behind her back just in case. Back at the firehouse, she overhears Cruz arguing with Otis about Antonio putting her in danger. Cruz later apologizes. (Hiding Not Seeking)

In Looking for a Lifeline, Sylvie has a pregnancy scare and Dawson takes her to buy a pregnancy test at a drugstore. When Antonio comes by, Brett tries to tell him, but just starts crying instead. She tests negative, but seems to have mixed feelings about it. (The Chance to Forgive) Before Dawson leaves for Puerto Rico, Brett has a fight with her about Dawson not respecting her rank during a call.

Season 7

Sylvie dates a man named Kyle Sheffield, a chaplain with the CFD and a friend of Foster. Their relationship is going strong until Brett asks Kyle for a favor including the chaplain helping Casey to get through a rough call. Kyle immediately does reach out to Casey, who, however, refuses to confide in him as soon as he finds out the chaplain heard about the incident from Brett and haven't read it in the report. After this, Kyle breaks up with Sylvie citing that their relationship has led to firefighters not being willing to confide in him. Brett is visibly upset about this but doesn't try to mend it. (Fault in Him)

She has difficulty moving on from him and sympathizes with Casey on the subject of tough break-ups. She then attempts to help him out by setting him up with her spin class instructor, Olivia. (Try Like Hell)

After a game night with their friends, Olivia says Casey is great, but that Brett should be the one dating him as the two were "meant for each other". Later, Brett confides this to Foster and Kidd, who seem to agree with Olivia's assessment and leave Brett feeling confused about her feelings towards Casey.

Kyle comes to Molly's and tells Sylvie he's moving to Indiana. Casey mistakes their goodbye hug for a reconciliation one and tells Sylvie Sheffield is the right man for her. Kyle then comes to 51 and out of nowhere proposes to Brett. The paramedic accepts his proposal stating to Casey that him (unknowingly) encouraging her to be with Kyle was the only reason why she said yes. (I'm Not Leaving You)

Season 8

Sylvie leaves with Kyle following the boiler explosion. (I'm Not Leaving You)

Sylvie returns to her hometown with her fiancé Kyle, the couple bumps into Hope at the market. She was visibly uncomfortable to see Hope and Sylvie reminds Kyle that she told him about Hope. She offers lunch to catch up and for her to explain, something Sylvie tries to avoid but is pushed into by Kyle and Hope is excited. (Sacred Ground)

At lunch, she is still upset with Hope but eases up after she shows she is remorseful for her acts and reveals that at the time she was in Chicago, she had just gotten out of an abusive relationship. The pair make amends. (A Real Shot in the Arm)

She experiences relationship problem but tries to make it work with Kyle, though it was clear she misses her life in Chicago and isn't happy with her new quiet life with Kyle, so they break up.

She returns to Station 51 and is given her former position. (Badlands)

She is surprised when her biological mother wants to make contact and she has mixed feelings, but ultimately goes to see her. She realizes that she couldn't do it alone and asks Casey to come with her for support. After a terrible meeting with her stepfather Scott, she believes she made a mistake. While at the Firehouse, Capp tells her she has a visitor and she is approached by her birth mother, Julie, who apologizes for her husband's actions and reveals she is pregnant with her second child. Shocked, she listens as Julie tells her that she tracked her down because she wanted to make a connection with her before giving birth and have her in the child's life. (Off The Grid)

Brett spends time with Julie, who is happy at getting to know her and teases her for her obvious feelings for Casey. They soon believe that she is about to have the baby, but it turns out to be a false alarm, although the pair are still happy with the chance to talk more. (The Tendency of a Drowning Victim)

Brett continues to bond with her mother by helping her house shop. (Protect a Child)

She finds herself at the hospital with her biological mother giving birth. Unfortunately, Julie does not make it through the birth; however, the baby does. Brett became the older half-sister of a little girl. (I'll Cover You)

Sylvie is unable to come to terms with the fact that her mother has died, but attends the funeral with her adoptive family in attendance. She later goes to the hospital to check on her half sister and see if she is doing fine. She is dismayed to see that a riot has broken out at the fire house due to the closing of another house. Her stepfather Scott nearly forces her to care for the child or he'll give her up, but she later finds him at the hospital, outside his child's room pacing. After a talk, she convinces him to keep the child after seeing his concern for her and offers to help him in anyway she can. (Light Things Up)

Brett is pleased to see Scott has decided to keep the baby and named her Amelia, which was her mother's middle name. Scott announces he will move back home, but tells Brett to visit and be a part of her little sister's life. At the end of the episode, she is at Molly's when Capp returns and joins in the celebration for him. (51's Original Bell)

Season 9

Brett and the squad welcome new paramedic Gianna Mackey, a friend of Cruz. She is amused when Cruz is late to introduce her. She takes Mackey on a call, with both finding a man who has overdosed. While tending to him, a gun is held to her head by the man's brother, who threatens them to help him or die. She keeps her cool and talks him down before taking the brother to the ambulance to transport him to the hospital. Afterwards, she learns from Kim Burgess that the brothers are heavy criminals. She later hears the younger brother died and worries about the elder one taking revenge. She worries about him stalking her, especially when she finds her apartment door open. Not taking any chances, she calls Casey and he decides to sleep over to protect her. She and Casey spend the time joking around by playing games and having a good time. Much later, she and Mackey are called out and her stalker appears behind them in his car, ramming them off the road. (Rattle Second City)

Brett and Mackey are shown to have survived the crash, but are trapped inside the overturned ambulance. After breaking free, they wonder if the gunman is still out there. They are soon rescued after Casey and Truck 81 show up. They find the stalker trapped in his car, begging for help. Despite his actions, Brett frees him and gets him the medical attention he needs. (That Kind Of Heat)

Brett and Mackey become close, especially when the latter allows Brett to destroy a drone (that seriously injured a woman) to vent her frustration. Brett thanks her for this and gives her encouragement in pursuing Gallo. (Smash Therapy)

Brett goes to see Chief Boden, who is with Chief Coulson, the head of paramedics. Coulson reveals that a man Brett and Mackey treated had no trace of the drugs they gave him and accuses Mackey of stealing them from the ambulance. Shocked, Brett immediately jumps to her defense by denying this. At Molly's, she discusses the situation with Mackey and Cruz. After Cruz mentions a patient stealing drugs from a paramedic, Brett realizes that the people who called about a seizure were actually scam artists and that they stole the drugs after distracting them with the case. The pair then work together to find the real thieves. After doing so, Brett and Mackey tell the other paramedics that they were conned and Chief Coulson and the police arrive to arrest the culprits, who had the drugs in their pockets. Afterwards they celebrate at the bar, where Mackey expresses her gratitude to Brett for believing in her and Brett tells her she will always have her back, but jokingly leaves her to deal with Cruz, who has found out about her and Gallo. (Blow This Up Somehow)

Season 10

Brett is finally happy in the romantic department, but the amount of non-urgent calls Ambulances get worries her. Ever since the pandemic, they treat many "frequent flyers", which slows down their response times to actual accidents. She comes up with an idea of applying Paramedicine into practice, as they did in San Diego. Paramedicine is based on special relief units treating the patients who, for example, just forget to take their medicine (often in order to talk to the paramedics because they’re lonely).

Season 11

After delivering a baby who barely survives, because of a malfunction with the PIC on the previous shift. Brett goes as far as threatening to quit if the PIC did not get reprimanded. When Boden raises concerns about her behaviour, she mentions that her birth mom was the same age as Amber when Sylvie was put up for adoption.

Season 12

Sylvie prepares for her wedding during most of the episodes

Relationships

Matthew Casey

see Brettsey

Casey has been developing a bond with Brett since Season 7 when they grew closer as friends while bonding over the loss of Dawson. She helps him look for a new apartment after a fire burns down his place, and she is concerned for him when he suffers some trauma after a scary call, giving him advice and offering to be there if he ever wanted to talk. However, Brett starts questioning her own feelings towards Casey when her friend Olivia, whom she had set up on a date with Casey, tells her that she should be with him, and that they were "meant for each other". Brett gets advice from Kidd and Foster on this, who seemingly agree and she ends up acting awkward and nervous around Casey.

After he is injured on a call, Brett tends to a burn on his neck, teasing him about his bandage skills. Casey then compliments her work, jokingly telling her that she should work in EMS. The two then share a long look before Brett quickly leaves and Matt is clearly confused. Casey is now unsure about his feelings towards Brett, and when Boden invites him to a dinner, telling him to bring a date, he nervously tries to ask Brett, but is interrupted before getting the chance and then gets cold feet. When he sees Brett and Kyle the chaplain at Molly's sharing a hug, he jumps to conclusions and assumes that they had gotten back together. He tells her that they are good together, before she gets a chance to explain that they're just friends. Brett seems upset by this and is confused further. Kyle then proposes to Brett at the firehouse with everyone looking on, including a stunned Casey, and she accepts, although seems reluctant. Casey congratulates her and she tells him that it was what he said at Molly's that made her accept. He realises that he had unknowingly pushed Brett back to the chaplain, and he is clearly upset by this.

At the start of Season 8, Brett has moved back to Fowlerton with Kyle, but she is unsatisfied with the slow-paced life of the firehouse there and misses Chicago and everyone at 51. She and Kyle amicably break up and she returns to Chicago, where she reunites with everyone and Casey is happy to see her back, saying that 51 isn't the same without her. The two continue to grow closer, and Casey starts becoming jealous when he sees her with another man, Ryan, and assumes they're dating, to which Brett quickly explains that they're just friends, prompting knowing looks from Foster. When he teases her again about Ryan, she talks about her lack of luck when it comes to romance, but he tells her that she deserves to find exactly what she wants in a relationship, resulting in some heart-eyes on Brett's part.

When Dawson briefly returns to Chicago to invite Casey to a charity ball, he asks Brett's advice and she encourages him to go, but is visibly upset. He goes to the ball and he and Dawson end up spending the night together before she leaves the next morning. Brett asks Matt how the night went, to which he tells her it was great. Foster teases her more, but she tells her "he seems happy; that makes me happy". Casey and Brett tend to an elderly victim who had lost his wife in a house fire, and they search for his beloved cat. Whilst they wait, she asks for his advice as she has received information that her birth mother is seeking contact. Not quite knowing what to do, he tells her "I've been impressed by your ability to see the good in people, always. If anyone can handle this kind of bomb dropped in their lap, it's you." She then receives another letter from her birth mother herself and she asks Casey to throw it away for her, to which he agrees, but keeps it anyway. When she later asks about the letter, he smugly shows her the letter, saying that he knew she'd change her mind. She gets angry, to his hilarious confusion, as he didn't do what she asked and asks him to get rid of it again. He throws the letter in the trash, but Brett later comes to his apartment, saying that she's changed her mind and wants the letter back. He seems confused as she saw him throw it away, but she doesn't buy it and asks him if he went back and got the letter after she'd left. He smiles and says "Are you gonna yell at me again if I did?" She asks him to stay with her as she opens it, only to find a name and an address. He offers to drive her to the house, for which she is grateful.

When Brett introduces her birth mother, Julie, to Casey, she mistakes their relationship and asks her how long they have been dating, to which Brett quickly explains that they're just friends, but Julie isn't entirely convinced. When a realtor asks Brett out and she seems unsure, Julie tells her that she's hung up on Casey. She reaffirms their platonic relationship, and explains that Casey was married to her best friend, and so nothing was going to happen. However, she starts to question why she is reluctant to date anyone else. As she leaves after a shift, the relator calls her, and, as she looks on at Casey, she turns him down, telling him that she's "got some things to sort out." Having finally acknowledged her growing feelings for Casey. Julie goes into labour and Brett calls him for support when the doctor explains that there are some complications. When Casey arrives at the hospital, the doctor tells Brett that Julie has died in labour. She is devastated, but goes to see her little sister and cries as she holds her. Brett is heartbroken by Julie's death and Casey continues to check up on her, telling her that how she's feeling isn't silly. When Julie's husband starts to have doubts about raising the baby, he asks Brett to look after her or he'll put her up for adoption. She is shocked and completely unsure what to do. She confides in Casey and breaks down in his arms, grieving for her mother. He tells her that "Whatever you decide, I'm here". She appreciates this, but ends up convincing Julie's husband to keep the baby. At Cruz's wedding, she and Casey share some longing looks during the vows.

In Rattle Second City, Sylvie worries about a stalker and comes back home to find her apartment unlocked. Before going inside, she calls Casey and he insists on sleeping over to protect her until they hear otherwise. They spend the evening playing Heads Up, teasing each other over their terrible Australian accents. They then share a moment before Sylvie goes to bed, but not before gazing at Matt as he makes up the couch to sleep on. Later on, the stalker chases Brett and Mackey when they head out and runs them off a bridge after trying to shoot at them.

Upon hearing of this, Casey rushes to the scene. When he sees the wreck, he jumps out of the moving truck to reach Brett quicker. He runs to her and checks if she's okay, to which she is stunned to see him there so fast. She later questions him as to why she only saw him there at first, but Casey lies and tells her that they had all rushed down together. She then blurts out "It's always been you" to Casey's shock, as he seemingly realizes her feelings for him. She tries to roll back on this, but Casey isn't convinced. Brett runs to Kidd, telling her "I basically just told Casey that I'm in love with him." Kidd asks her why it's such a bad thing for him to know how she feels, but she tells her she can't feel that way. She then tries to pretend she never said it so that things could go back to the way they were.

Casey awkwardly asks Brett out to Molly's. At Molly's, Gallo recounts the real events of the accident to Brett's amazement, as she realizes Casey feels the same way about her. The two share some longing looks whilst Gallo talks, but she abruptly leaves, making up an excuse about meeting a friend, leaving Matt seemingly hurt and confused. For the duration of their next shift, Brett avoids Casey, to his annoyance, and Severide picks up on this and tells him to sort it out. Wanting answers, Matt shows up at Brett's apartment and she tells him that she was only avoiding him "so I wouldn't end up doing this" and she kisses him. He then kisses her back. Brett then admits that she'd "wanted this for for a long time" and Matt agrees. Just as it seems that the two were going to sleep together, Brett pauses and explains the reason that she had been so scared to act on her feelings for Casey, asking him: "If Gabby came back to Chicago, right now, tonight, and asked you to leave with her, would you go?" Matt hesitates, but tells her that he hadn't spoken to Dawson in ages, but Brett doesn't see this as an answer to her question and pushes him further before he admits "I don't know." Brett is clearly heartbroken, her fears having come true. She tells Casey that she knew he was "still in love with Gabby all along" and so blames herself for her actions. Casey tries to explain that things were more complicated than that, but she doesn't see this as complicated at all. She asks Casey to leave, and although reluctant, he agrees. A devastated Brett then breaks down alone on her couch.

While talking to Severide about this, Matt reveals that he has only ever thought about Brett for the past few months.

When Casey suffers another head injury during a call, all of his concerns about not being fit for work emerge again (after his injury in Not Like This). Brett is the first person he confides in revealing all of his fears and uncertainties. She accompanies him during all of the medical exams. In A White-Knuckle Panic, Casey confesses to Brett that he is in love with her and though it takes her a while, she eventually reciprocates, telling Matt that she is in love with him too. The two end the season with officially getting together. (No Survivors)

Their blissful honeymoon stage is cut short when Casey is forced to move to Oregon and their relationship changes to a long-distance one. (Two Hundred)

After Casey found out Dylan broke up with Brett, he went to her apartment. After Brett opened the door he proposed to her ending the season. (Red Waterfall)

Before being called out on a call Brett´s engagement ring gets stuck in her locker, confirming their engagement. (Barely Gone)
