Short and Fat is the ninth episode of the fourth season and the 78th overall episode of Chicago Fire.

Summary[]

Clues to Serena's possible whereabouts are uncovered, while Captain Patterson has news for everyone.

Plot[]

Continuing from Chief Boden’s arrest, the episode begins with Donna bailing him out of jail. In the meantime, Patterson is appointed as Battalion Chief and asks for the firehouse's cooperation. However, his actions as Chief include telling Cruz that Freddie can't come by the firehouse anymore, and telling Connie to stop making her dough ornaments inside the firehouse. Mouch, Hermann, and Otis all offer to help Connie, and Hermann also generously offers Freddie a job at Molly's. Meanwhile, Otis investigates the new guy Brett is interested in, a previous victim they helped, and uncovers his criminal record.

Sometime later, Suzie Wilder comes by to see Dawson, revealing she has been named in multiple lawsuits for credit card fraud, and thinking there’s a conspiracy against her. Before the conversation continues, Casey alerts Dawson to a news broadcast about her, which shows she lost her temper with the bystanders on scene who were insulting her and making lewd remarks. The news station got hold of a video recorded by someone in the crowd. Rallying a meeting with her close confidantes and ASA Steve Kot, Dawson proposed a theory Maddox is conspiring against them. The notion gains traction when she, Suzie, Boden, and Duffy, who were witnesses for his case, are all framed for things they didn't do to ruin their credibility. Kot states it's plausible but the theory needs to be proven with the discovery of Serena Holmes, as things won't look good with Boden. He also says until that gets sorted, they should all keep a level head and not draw attention to themselves to discourage further harassment.

Otis gives Brett his background report on Austin, her new date, which shows records of breaking and entering. On the date, Brett is about to confront Austin about his past but he surprises her by coming clean voluntarily, saying he wanted no secrets between them, and admitted he was just a stupid kid back then. He says he never told anyone this but he really likes her. His honesty leaves her smiling.

Meanwhile, Casey tells Jimmy to cool his relationship with Chili while everyone in the firehouse is seemingly being targeted. Jimmy tries to slow things down with Chili, but she reacts badly. Kelly visits Maddox's lawyer (work with whom he once had a fling) to convince her that Dawson and Boden are being targeted unfairly. She states she cannot share information about her client, and Kelly leaves disappointed.

Dawson visits Boden to talk about the recent events. Dawson lets him know that after talking to Antonio, Intelligence has decided to investigate this case as a favor to Firehouse 51.

Intelligence tracks down Serena, the woman who accused Boden at a hotel, and take her to interrogation where Boden is present. This proves to be a good move, as she reveals Maddox paid her to frame Boden and was going to get her out of the country later. After this confession, Antonio and Steve Kot confront Maddox with it, and with the fact that the men harassing Dawson confirmed Maddox had bribed them. Kot tells the stunned Maddox and his lawyer they should be thinking about his limited options and future.
