Short and Fat is the ninth episode of the fourth season and the 78th overall episode of Chicago Fire.

Clues to Serena's possible whereabouts are uncovered, while Captain Patterson has news for everyone.

Taking place after Chief Boden's arrest, the start of the episode begins with him being bailed out by Donna. In the meantime, Patterson is appointed to be Battalion Chief and asks for the firehouse's co-operation. However, his actions as Chief include telling Cruz that Freddie can't come by the firehouse anymore, and telling Connie to stop making her dough ornaments inside the firehouse. Mouch, Hermann and Otis all offer to help Connie, and Hermann also generously offers Freddie a job at Molly's. Meanwhile, Otis investigates the new guy Brett is interested in, a previous victim on scene and finds out his criminal records.

Meanwhile, Dawson gets ideas of there being a conspiracy. Earlier in the episode, she loses her temper with a by-stander on scene who continues to make insults and lewd remarks at her. This is unknowingly recorded by someone else and televised, creating the theory that Maddox is conspiring against Boden, Dawson, Suzzie and other firefighters who were witnesses to his case.

Otis gives Brett his background report on Austin, her new date, which shows records of breaking and entering. Meanwhile, Casey tells Jimmy to cool his relationship with Chilli, as everyone in the firehouse is seemingly being targeted. Jimmy tries to slow things down with Chilli, but she reacts badly. Kelly visits Maddox's layer and his previous fling, to convince her that Dawson and Boden are being targeted unfairly. However, she cannot share information about her client, Maddox with Kelly. He leaves disappointed.

Dawson visits Boden to talk about the recent events. Dawson lets him know that after talking to Antonio, Intelligence has decided to investigate this care as a favour to Firehouse 51.
