Heather Darden was the wife of the late Andy Darden. She and Andy have two kids, both boys, Ben and Griffin. Heather blames Kelly Severide for her husband's death because she thinks that he is the reason why Andy became a firefighter.
Heather was married to Andy Darden until he was killed in action in the pilot episode. After this she remains close to Matthew Casey, however she believes that it was Kelly Severide's fault that Andy was killed.
In A Problem House, Heather is out with her girlfriends on the first anniversary of Andy's death when she crashes her car. She was driving under the influence of alcohol, and the passenger of her car, one of her best friends, is killed. Heather is imprisoned for a DUI and vehicular manslaughter. She is given a 15 month sentence in prison.
While she is in prison, her sons, Ben and Griffin, stay with Casey. Heather is let out of prison early due to overcrowding and is happily reunited with her boys. They all leave for Florida when she is offered an on-site position as an apartment manager.
Andy Darden, her husband was killed in the Line of Duty, during the episode "Pilot". Heather begins to get close with Matthew Casey, kissing him in his car during one episode. Herself and Casey agree that it was not right for them to start a relationship due to Casey and Andy's relationship.
Initially, she doesn't talk to Severide and avoids him, only talking to Casey. This bothers him as he doesn't understand why she's so close to him. He even tries to talk to her and helps her with a few chores but she's resistant and eventually outright tells him that the only reason Andy was a firefighter was because of him and that he is the reason that he died. This worsens when he comes over to see Casey and finds her sleeping over at his house, making him think that they're going out.
Heather begins to act civil with Severide after she realises her husbands death was not his fault.
