Freddie Clemente was a gangbanger formally of the Insane Kings and a homeboy to Leon Cruz. He was looking to get out of the gang life and tried to get a job at Firehouse 51, seeking help from Joe, but Interim Battalion Chief Dallas Patterson didn't want him hanging around the firehouse. Herrmann and Otis then offered him a job at Molly's as a busboy. While working there, he was still learning the ropes, but when Chris referred to Freddie as 'Short and Fat', Freddie took great offense to it and stabbed Herrmann in the ribs and, after realizing what he has done, he flees the scene of the crime.
Luckily, Christopher is found in time and brought to Chicago Med, where he is saved. In the meantime, the police search for Freddie, managing to find him at the top of a fire escape on the verge of crumble, for which Cruz himself must save him. Safe but in custody, Freddie tries to justify himself in front of Cruz, saying that what he did to Herrmann just happened, but the firefighter has none of it and replies that all that is happening is Freddie's fault and nothing else.
At Freddie's trial Herrmann is angry and asks the judge to prevent Freddie from doing to anyone else what he did to him. While in prison, Freddie talks with his father, Luis, explaining that he's not scared by prison time, but can't get over having betrayed the trust of someone who tried to help him. For this, Luis asks Hermann to come to talk to him in prison: Herrmann expect Luis threatening him, knowing from Cruz about Luis' past, but the latter instead expresses deep regret, having raised Freddie to survive in the streets by never accept disrespect from anyone, and begs Herrmann to give Freddie another chance, since it's only Luis' fault what happened.
For this, Herrmann meets again with the judge, and asks her to be merciful, having understood what Freddie had to endure all his life. Freddie cries with emotion, in disbelief that someone is willing to believe in him, to which Herrmann that forgives him will allow himself to heal from the emotional damage he did to both of them.
