Chicago Fire Wiki

A Chicago Welcome is the thirteenth episode of the eighth season and the 172nd overall episode of Chicago Fire.

Summary[]

The surprising arrival of a new fire truck brings both joy and chaos to members of Firehouse 51. Boden and Severide are asked to make peace with an old foe for the greater good. Brett receives family news while Foster plans a party with friends.

Plot[]

The team gets a wonderful new truck for Truck 81. It has a nice heater, roomy seats, and other great features. The firefighters on Truck are excited, while Herrmann is jealous, complaining of being an afterthought.

Firehouse 51 responds to a house fire where an elderly couple, Tim and Gail Larson, live. Tim uses a burning endtable as a shield while he tries to save his wife.

Jerry Gorsch reveals that he got them the new truck. He asks Severide and Boden to support his proposal for an extra set of turnout gear for every firefighter. This means everyone can alternate and have their gear cleaned between uses, reducing exposure to carcinogens.

Brett and Casey visit Tim Larson. He says his wife went in for surgery and he's concerned about their cat, Dusty. Casey says they don't find cats in house fires because cats are good at escaping. He and his wife moved from Great Falls to Chicago and no one has come to visit him at the hospital. Then Tim receives the news that his wife died.

Brett and Casey go to find Dusty. She sets out treats to try to encourage Dusty to come back. Then she reveals to Casey that she learned her birth mom wants to meet her. She's hesitant to meet her, since her adoptive parents are the parents who really matter to her. Casey tells her that he admires her ability to see the best in others and has faith in her ability to handle this.

Cruz shows up to Foster's party, but she says she doesn't want him there.

Brett and Casey smuggle Dusty the cat into the hospital to visit his owner. He is sad about losing his wife and about lacking community support.

Mouch and Herrmann are still feuding. Brett takes in Dusty for a few days while Tim settles in to his new place. Cruz is mad at Foster because he thought she was inviting him to her party instead of telling him to stay away.

Truck 81 and Engine 51 respond to an emergency where people on a steep hill are holding on to each other in a chain, trying to keep a small child from falling into a cold body of water. They do a successful rope rescue. The mom rushes over, terrified since she had fallen asleep on the couch and didn't know her son had gotten out. Casey tells her all those people worked together to protect her son and she is grateful. "Chicago shows up for each other," says one man who helped.

Mouch apologizes for carrying on about the new truck. He admits he is a bit jealous since Herrmann got promoted and got his own rig. They make up.

Severide and Casey talk to Boden about Gorsch. Then they and comptroller Laura Martin have a meeting with Gorsch about his plan to use cheap gear from Dobson, which makes untested gear. Gorsch is friends with the head of sales for Dobson. The police interviewed Gorsch's friend and discovered Gorsch would get $200,000 in kickbacks. Gorsch decides to leave and talk to his attorney. Martin fires him. She promises Boden that they will get their equipment and thanks him.

Foster apologizes to Cruz for not being clear about her girls' night singles party. Cruz admits he's nervous about his upcoming wedding. Foster suggests they throw another rager together and asks that he never wear his awful tracksuit ever again.

Finally, a funeral is held for Gail Larson. At first, it is only Tim at the service. But then the people of Firehouse 51 and more show up. "Chicago shows up for each other," Brett tells him. Tim, grateful, cries. Brett comforts him during the service.
